Volleyball Set to Start Conference Play

THE STREAK CONTINUES:
The Urban Knights are now on a six game winning streak going into their match with the Dominican University Penguins. Dan Yang claimed the first Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honor in Urban Knight history for the week of Sept 7 – Sept 13.  Yang led AAU to a 3-0 record by hitting .361 and averaging 4.39 points per set - both tops in the PacWest for the week. Yang posted 31 kills, 5 block solos, 3 aces and a block assist in compiling her 39.5 points. She was voted to the William Jessup All-Tournament team following their 3-0 showing.

HOME SWEET HOME:
Their match against PUC marked the Knights first of the season. Up next, the Urban Knights return to their home court  to play Dominican University (Sept 18), which marks the start of PacWest Conference play. AAU then plays two matches on the road (NDNU and Menlo College) and then hosts a five game home stint against Grand Canyon, Chaminade, and Hawaii Pacific University.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS:
First year PacWest Conference opponent, Dominican University, will make their way to Kezar Pavilion Friday evening to play AAU in the Urban Knights first conference match of the season. DU is 2-8 on the season (as of 9/14/09) and has dropped seven of their last eight matches. The Penguins are led by Gabby Pecora who is third in the PacWest this week in points, averaging 4.00 points per game. She led the league in kills per set (3.80) and has totaled 146 overall kills thus far. Brooke Swingle has notched 246 assists while Ashlee Sand has racked up 25 total blocks. 

SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS: 
Top CCAA opponents handed the Argos' their first six losses of the season. NDNU was able picked up back-to-back wins against CSU East Bay and CSU Monterey Bay before they dropping their next four matches. Their most recent loss came at the hands of Central Washington University. On the offensive front, Christin Villamayor leads NDNU in kills (124) and has the highest hitting percentage (4.03), and Joanna Gresh is the teams assist leader with 264 of the teams 367 total assists.

women's volleyball team won three straight sets for the fourth game in a row tonight against the Pioneers of Pacific Union College at Kezar Pavilion. The 3-0 win (25-16, 25-21, 25-13) marks their first home match victory this season and their tenth overall. Junior outside hitter Dan Yang and sophomore middle blocker Amy Bush proved why they were selected as PacWest Conference Top 10 players of the week this week, they finished with 12 kills a piece while Yang led the team in digs and Bush served up four aces.
