THE WEEK AHEAD:
The Academy of Art University baseball team will travel to southern California this week for a game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Apr. 10 at 11:00 AM and then a contest with Cal State San Bernardino that same day at 3:00 PM. The Urban Knights finish with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 11 beginning at 11:00 AM. All games are scheduled to be played at Toro Field.
LOOKING BEYOND:
There will be a quick turn-around for AAU after this weekend as a single game with Menlo lies ahead on Apr. 14 and the final stretch of five games in four days are scheduled to wrap up the season.
SCOUTING THE TOROS:
CSUDH was hovering right around a .500 winning percentage early on in the season before winning seven of nine games. Season highlights for the Toros thus far include back-to-back series victories against then-ranked #24
Chico State and then-ranked #11 Cal State L.A. Senior first baseman Jon Alia and sophomore infielder Carlos Leyva are both over .400 at this point in the season and Alia leads the team in home runs (12), RBIs (50) and total bases (112). Among the starting pitchers for CSUDH, junior left-handed pitcher Kody Kurowski (5-2) sports the best record and ERA (2.80) while junior righty Brett Montgomery (4-2) is pacing the team with 43 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES:
A sub-.500 team for most of the season, Cal State San Bernardino fell further behind when it matched up with then-ranked #19 Chico State. Despite losing both of those series, the Coyotes did salvage one victory against the Wildcats and proceeded to take three out of four games from then-ranked #30 CSU Dominguez Hills. CSUSB is 1-4 in the month of April after completing a series with the Knights' upcoming opponent, Cal Poly Pomona. Of the regular starters, junior shortstop Kyle Davis has the best batting average (.331), but it is senior outfielder Johnnie Haas who has racked up the most hits (44), RBIs (27) and total bases (64). The Coyotes' pitching has not necessarily been as consistent as their hitting because although junior right-handed pitcher Daniel Stenavich (3-0) has a 2.70 ERA over 48.1 innings and 22 strikeouts, junior righty Erick Carillo has the most strikeouts (34) and a 6.02 ERA.
CSU STANISLAUS SERIES:
Most recently, the Urban Knights were in Turlock, California for a Sunday doubleheader against CSU Stanislaus in which the Warriors defeated AAU 15-6 and then 13-5. The opening contest was close after the first 1.5 innings with the score 3-2, but CSUS then unleashed a big rally over the next two innings in which Jacob Thelen hit a pair of three-run home runs and it wasn't until the eighth inning when the Knights would score again. They did put together five consecutive singles in that inning and made the score 15-6 which became the final score shortly thereafter. In the second game, Stanislaus had built a 7-0 lead before AAU was able to get on the board with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Unfortunately, the seven-inning affair would conclude with the Warriors on top 13-5. Freshman left fielder
Zach Mexicano was 4-for-7 with two RBIs in the series while junior right fielder
Matthew Ko was 4-for-10 with two runs scored.
