Antioch, CA--- The Academy of Art University men's golf team concluded the three round Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Championships today at the par-72, 6,864-yard Roddy Ranch Golf Club in Antioch California. The Urban Knights were led by
Matt Garcia (Burlingame, CA) who turned in his best performance of the season. ART U as team, however, struggled a bit on the course as they managed a seventh place finish beating out Chaminade University. A bright spot in the tournament for the team was that ART U was only 13 strokes shy of snatching the sixth place spot from BYU-Hawaii.
While Grand Canyon University and University of Hawaii-Hilo battled for the top spot as a team, it was
Matt Garcia who fought to secure the top spot individually.
Garcia was virtually perfect from the field as he entered a three-round bout with UHH's Logan Goulding for the first place spot in the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Championships. Round one,
Garcia shot one under par (71) to give him the early lead over Goulding, who shot three over (75). Round two saw
Garcia's lead take a hit as Goulding caught and surpassed him by shooting three under (69) finishing the round at an even 144, while Garcia shot two over par and made his round two final score 145.
Garcia shot two under par to bring him even with Goulding at 215 to conclude the third and final round of play. A one-hole sudden death playoff round was played to decide the sole winner of the tournament,
Garcia emerged victorious garnering him his first first place finish of the season.
Garcia's first place honor marks the first for any of the Academy of Art University men's golfers.
The Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Championships concludes the Academy of Art University's men's golf inaugural season.
