Box Score

Chico, Calif. (4/21/09) -- At Nettleton Stadium on Tuesday night, Academy of Art University wrapped up its 2009 baseball campaign with a 15-4 loss to the No. 4 Chico State Wildcats. Although seven Urban Knights registered hits in the game, Chico State's pitching allowed just one earned run. AAU was led by the freshmen pair of shortstop Ryan Worley and left fielder Martin Layton-Santos who each went 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.

With one out in the first inning, sophomore third baseman Chris Vargas singled, senior catcher Florentino Ubungen walked, and junior first baseman Mike Gutierrez also singled (adding to his season-best 11-game hitting streak) to load the bases. Unfortunately for the Knights, the next two batters struck out and the inning concluded.

In the Wildcats' second, Kevin Seaver led off with a home run and Chico State had a series of hits with runners on to eventually take a 5-0 lead. A wild pitch by junior righty Danny Couser allowed one more run to cross the plate and Chico was now in front by six runs.

AAU got on the board in the fourth when freshman right fielder Brandon Kistler reached on an error and came around to score on a triple by Worley. Layton-Santos got Worley home on a groundout, but the next two outs were made and the scoreboard read 6-2 in favor of the Wildcats.

Chico State combined to score five runs in the fifth and sixth innings on a series of RBI doubles and singles as well as a four-run eighth where the lead ballooned. Unfortunately for the Knights, it wasn't until the ninth inning when Academy of Art University would push any more runs across.

The ninth began with Layton-Santos getting to first base on an error followed by a single off the bat of sophomore second baseman Van Hanson. Then, with one out, Hanson stole his first base of the season and Vargas hit a sacrifice fly to score Layton-Santos. Another fielding error would later bring Hanson home, but that same play would also spell the final out for the Knights.

In addition to Worley and Layton-Santos, Vargas was 1-for-3 with a RBI (his team-leading 22nd of the season) and Hanson went 1-for-4 with one run scored. Sophomore centerfielder Darnell Quinney, Gutierrez, and junior right-handed pitcher Matthew Ko also had hits in the game.

Four Academy of Art University pitchers appeared in the game with Ko (0-8) getting the start, taking the loss, and lasting two innings while allowing five runs on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts. Couser (0-5) came on as the first relief pitcher and he gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Next in line was freshman right-handed pitcher Edgar Zelaya (0-2) who surrendered two runs on one hit with two walks and no strikeouts. Finally, righty Quinney (0-7) came on to finish the final inning and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with no walks or strikeouts.

While Chico State moves to 29-19 on the year, the Urban Knights finish their inaugural season 0-30 overall.
