Game Notes
THE WEEK AHEAD:
This Saturday (Apr. 18), the Academy of Art University baseball team will play the first of two weekend doubleheaders against the CCAA's Cal Poly Pomona. The final two games of the series will be played on Sunday, Apr. 19. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at 12:00 PM on each respective day.
LOOKING BEYOND:
With the conclusion of this weekend's games, the Urban Knights finish their season with a matchup against one of the elite Division II baseball programs in Chico State. This single game will take place on Tuesday, Apr. 21 at Nettleton Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
Cal Poly Pomona was a .500 team early on in the season and also throughout the first 13 games of CCAA play, but then the Broncos exploded to win six consecutive games from mid to late-March. That winning streak was highlighted by a 14-7 victory over DII baseball powerhouse Sonoma State. Now having won five of its last seven contests and still very much in the race to clinch one of four CCAA Tournament berths, CPP faces Academy of Art University in a non-conference matchup. Senior infielder Jeff Ringholm, one of the Broncos' hottest hitters, is currently batting a team-leading .430 while freshman catcher Jenzen Torres paces the squad with three home runs and senior designated hitter/catcher Chris Brehm has 74 total bases and 29 RBIs. Amongst the regular starting rotation, sophomore right-handed pitcher Casey Yokubaitis (2-2) has the best ERA (3.19) on the team, but freshman righty Kevin Bossom (3-4) and junior right-hander Brad Wilson (3-5) carry 5.24 and 5.28 ERAs respectively in addition to combining for 72 strikeouts. Junior right-handed reliever Keith Powers serves as the team's closer and has amassed four saves thus far along with 10 strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work.
MENLO COLLEGE SINGLE GAME:
Despite allowing the Oaks to score 19 runs, Academy of Art University's offense flexed its muscles in a 19-14 loss on Tuesday at Cartan Field. After falling behind 8-0, the Knights got two in the third on a double by sophomore first baseman
Chris Vargas and freshman shortstop
Ryan Worley bunted himself aboard in the fourth before coming home on a single by junior designated hitter
Mike Gutierrez who extended his current hitting streak to seven games. Menlo, however, went on to increase its advantage to 15 runs by way of homers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Appearing to be down and out, AAU then unleashed an 11-run rally over the next three innings highlighted by consecutive home runs from Vargas and senior catcher
Florentino Ubungen in the seventh.
Vargas finished the day with a homer, four RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks in his 3-for-4 performance.
Ubungen and freshman third baseman
Brandon Kistler each added home runs of their own while combining to go 4-for-11 with five runs scored.
