Returning from Hawaii: The Urban Knights just finished a five day, three game road trip against three of the Hawaiian teams in the PacWest. After dropping the first game to BYU-Hawaii, the Academy of Art University defeated both Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo before returning home. The Urban Knights rallied to beat Chaminade in the second half with a 1-0 score. Against Hilo, the Urban Knights were in control of the entire game, and were able to keep the strong Vulcan offense quiet, winning by a score of 2-0.
Hawaiian Highlights: Freshman Aubrey Williams scored the lone goal for the Urban Knights in the game against Chaminade. The goal was assisted by sophomore Morgan LeFever. Sophomore Olivia Dupon scored both games against Hilo. The first was unassisted, and the second was off a pass by freshman Carmela Doerr. Goal Keeper Solveig Barnes played every game for the Academy of Art University, allowing only three goals and recording 16 total saves in the three games combined.
Scouting Dixie State College: The Red Storm is having a tremendous 2009 season. They have just one loss in conference play and have a 12-4 overall record. They are currently in 1st place in the PacWest rankings. They have had two players win PacWest player of the week in 2009. As a team they have 47 goals, 324 shots and 37 saves. Mikala Wilkes leads the Red Storm with 11 goals and four assists for a total of 26 points this season. Wendy Stratford has seven goals and two assists for 16 points, and Camille Peterson and Shannon Larsen both have four goals and six assists for 14 points this year. Their two goal keepers Abby Monroe, and Tonya Smith have a combined total of 19 goals allowed, 37 saves, 12 wins and six shutouts. The last time the Urban Knights played the Red Storm they lost 0-7.
Scouting Grand Canyon University: The Antelopes currently sit just below the Urban Knights in the PacWest rankings in 6th place. With a conference record of 5-5-2 and an overall record of 8-8-2, they are still a top contender in the PacWest. The 'Lopes have a team total of 29 goals, 289 shots, and 81 saves on the season. They are led by Kaylen Jackson and Kayla Poe who each have seven goals and one assist for a total of 15 points, and Nichole Elias who has five goals and two assists, for 12 points. Poe was named PacWest player of the week for November 2nd. Mileena Buchei is the 'Lopes go to goal keeper playing in more than 1400 minutes, allowing 24 goals, posting 65 saves, with seven wins and three shutouts. The last match up between the Antelopes and the Urban Knights resulted in a 2-2 tie after second overtime.
Wrapping up the 2009 season: These two games will be the final of the Urban Knights' 2009 season. They surpassed their win total from last season and only show signs of improvement and strength. As a team they have a total of 11 goals, 144 shots, and 141 saves on the year. Freshman Carmela Doerr leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points; followed by sophomore Olivia Dupon who has three goals and one assist for seven points, and freshman Jasmine Sharpe who has two goals for four points this year. Sophomore goal keeper Solveig Barnes has been solid for the Urban Knights. Barnes has played in over 1460 minutes, allowing 34 goals and posting 116 saves. She has three wins and three shutouts on the season.
