AAU Snaps Three Game Losing Streak

Box Score

San Francisco, CA--
The Urban Knights snapped a three game losing streak tonight, in convincing fashion, against Notre Dame de Namur University in their final match at Kezar Pavilion, 3-0(28-26, 25-20, 25-22) . Although tomorrow's match marks the Knight's final of the season, AAU honored lone senior Heather Allen before the match began in their home gym. PacWest player of the week, Dan Yang, lead all players tonight with a team and match high 14 kills and 13 digs in the Urban Knights victory.

Set one started with the Knights notching the first point of the match on service error by NDNU. A Jakovljevic kill on the very next play put the Knights up by two early. The lead was short lived, as the Argos were able to bring the score to 2-points a piece on the next two plays. The score between the two teams remained close  and the Knights saw themselves down for the first time, 13-12, after a timeout call by NDNU. With a set that saw 14 ties and six lead changes it was no wonder the set went into extra points. AAU fought from being down 23-22 to take set one 28-26.

AAU struck first again in the second set, opening with a 9-5 run. The Argos, however, would bring the score to within two points, 9-7, but another 7-3 run extended the Knights lead to 16-10. AAU would continue to extend the gap and bring their lead to as many as seven points, 21-14. NDNU would not quit and went on a run of their own late in the set. The Argos were able to bring the score to within three points, but 23-20 would be as close as they would get as AAU closed out set two on a 3-0 run, taking the set 25-20.

In the third and final set AAU meant business. They jumped out again to an early 10-5 lead, which then extended to a 17-11 advantage. But just as it would seem the game was close to over, the Argos rallied with a run to bring the score to 19-19. The Urban Knights took a timeout to re-group but after the timeout NDNU took their first lead of the set, 21-19. AAU scored the next two points to put them back on top 22-21. Another timeout was called, this time by NDNU, and after the break the Knights scored two points giving them match point, 24-22. Then a kill by Jakovljevic gave the Knights the 25-22 win of the set and the match. Despite being out hit .180 to .138 in the final set AAU's defense was able to step-up for the win.

For the Argos Caitlin Torres, Breanna Morales and Alayna Galeai all finished with nine kills a piece, while Galeali added 17 digs. Christina Villamayor chipped in with eight kills and seven digs. Joanna Gresh had a match high 33 assists to go with her 12 digs.

The Urban Knights' Jelena Jakovljevic finished with 10 kills and eight digs, while Amy Bush was not far not far behind with nine kills on 18 attempts and zero errors for a .500 attack percentage. Nicolette Hagan (five block assists) and Camille Board (six block assists) combined for 5.5 of the teams 7.5 total blocks. Melissa Cheng dished out 29 assists on the night.

AAU faces Dixie State College tomorrow evening at the College of San Mateo for their final match of the season. Opening Serve is set for 7:00 PM.
