AAU drops Non-Conference Match to CSU Monterey Bay, 0-3

The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match this evening to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 0-3. The Urban Knights kept the game close dropping the match by just nine total points, 21-25, 23-25, 22-25. Dan Yang and Jelena Jakovljevic led the Knights, finishing with 15 and 14 kills respectively. Yang added another double-double to her belt with 12 digs to go with her 15 kills,. Melissa Cheng led all players with 35 assists. Despite the match highs in kills and assists AAU finished with a .187 hitting percentage to that of the.269 hitting percentage of CSU Monterey Bay. AAU was also out blocked 10-3. The loss drops AAU to 14-6 overall, they still remain 3-3 in conference.

The Urban Knights struck first in set one, jumping out to an early 5-4 lead. A run by the Otters would bring the score to 14 a piece which would be as close as AAU would get to the win. Despite Jakovljevic's five kills in the first set alone AAU was unable to hold on and ended up dropping the first set 21-25.

The second set saw AAU jump out to an early 10-5 lead over the Otters. CSU Monterey Bay would rally back to tie the score at 22 a piece. The Otters only allowed AAU to score one more point before taking the second set 23-25.

The third and final set was much like the second except the Urban Knights never led. A 5-5 tie early in the game would be as close as the Urban Knights would get to the lead until late in the game. With the score tied at 22-22, AAU only scored one point while the Otters knocked down the final three points of the set and the match.

For the Otters Lauren Shacklock finished with 15 kills on the night while Rheann Fall added 11 kills and eight digs.  Dana Grimm and Monique Sena combined for 31 assists on the night, finishing with 15 and 16 assists respectfully.

AAU returns to the floor next Tuesday for a home match against Menlo College at Kezar Pavilion. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
