San Francisco, CA--- The Urban Knights defeated the visiting Hawks of Holy Names University tonight at Kezar Pavilion, 3-1. AAU, as a team, finished the match with a .376 hitting percentage and had 10 more kills (53) than Holy Names who finished the match with 43 kills and a .161 hitting percentage for the night.
Nicolette Hagan and
Amy Bush lead the way for the Knights offensively finishing with 14 and 13 kills respectfully. While
Melissa Cheng dished out 40 assists which topped the total number of assists Holy Names had as a team by four. The win brings AAU's overall record to 17-11 they still remain 4-7 in PacWest play. Holy Names drops to 9-15 overall and 7-2 in the Cal Pac.
AAU opened the first set with an
Amy Bush kill which sparked a 7-4 run. The Hawks rallied back with a run of their own and an error by AAU brought the score to 8 a piece. The Urban Knights would score the final 9 of 15 points to close out the first set, 25-19.
The Urban Knights struck first , as they scored the first point of the second set. That point, however, would be their only lead of the set. Holy Names quickly jumped out to an early 6-8 lead. AAU answered by scoring the next 2 out of three points bringing them to within one point, 8-9. But that would be as close as they would get in the set. Holy Names gradually started to widen the gap and eventually took set two, 19-25. As a team AAU committed nine errors in the second set alone five of which were off the serve.
The Urban Knights bounced back after dropping the second set and took control early by scoring the first three points of the third. Holy Names would score two points to bring the score to 4-2, but a
Melissa Cheng kill sparked a 7-3 run which catapulted AAU out in front once and for all. With the score marked 17-10 Holy Names made a run of their own and were able to get to within three points, 19-16. But the Knights finished on a 6-1 run retiring the set 25-17. AAU hit a whopping .571 percent and connected on 16 kills of 29 attempts.
The fourth and final set was all AAU as they cruised to a 25-9 win. The Urban Knights only allowed six kills in the entire set and posted five of their 10 total blocks. As a team AAU hit .500 percent in the set and knocked down 11 kills of 22 attempts.
For Holy Names Ashley Nickell lead all player with a match high 16 kills. Rebecca Chase and Natalie Kasbarian combined for 32 assists, each dishing out 17 and 15 respectfully.
The Urban Knights return to the floor tomorrow night when they take on the Dominican University Penguins for the final time this season at the Conlan Recreation Center in San Rafael, CA. Opening Serve is set for 7:00 PM.
