Urban Knights Unable to Top the Vulcans

Box Score

Hilo, HI ---
The Academy of Art Urban Knights were unable to tie the two game series, 1-1, tonight as they dropped their final meeting with the Vulcans in three sets, 17-25, 15-25, 21-25. AAU was outdone in almost every category except blocks, as a team AAU out blocked Hilo 9 - 6.

The Urban Knights dropped the first set 17-25. The Vulcans struck first, but AAU was able to turn a 7-1 run into a 10-9 lead. Hilo answered with a 9-1 run of their own to give them the 18-11 advantage midway through the set. AAU would go on to  score only six more points before the set retired. Setter Melissa Cheng led the Urban Knights with 3 kills in the first.

The second set was much like the first. The Urban Knights saw themselves down 12-2 early. Jelena Jakovljevic scored the third point for the Knights and sparked a 7-2 run which brought the Knights to within five points. But just as soon as AAU found their groove the Vulcans struck again with a 9-4 run to close out the second set.

During the third set the Urban Knights started to come alive. They took a small lead early on but Hilo rallied back to tie the score at 10-10. The third set saw eight ties with the last one coming at 12-12. A service error by AAU started Hilo on the attack, but after a timeout the Urban Knights scored the next three points to bring the score to 23-20. Unfortunately that would be as close as AAU would get as they dropped the third and final set 25-21.

For the Vulcans, Fabiane Seben had a monster match that included a .524 attack percentage with 14 kills on 21 attempts with three errors. She also posted six block assists, an ace and three digs. Josimara Pinheiro was close behind at .400 with 12 kills on 25 attempts with two errors. She also added seven digs.

For the Urban Knights Jakovljevic and Yang tied for six kills each they both added six and seven digs respectfully with Yang adding four block assists. Hagan was not far behind as she added five kills and four block assists.

The loss brings AAU to 16-11 overall and 4-7 in conference play. The Urban Knights will get some much needed rest before returning to the court Thursday Oct.29 when they play Holy Names University. Game time is set for 7:00 PM at Kezar Pavilion
