Santa Cruz, CA--  The Academy of Art University headed to UC Santa Cruz to face the Division III standouts Friday afternoon. The women played hard and were in the game the entire time. The game was scoreless heading into the late minutes of regulation play. The Banana Slugs were able to strike first by scoring off a penalty kick in last fifteen minutes of the match. The lone goal was enough to hold the Urban Knights, and they ended up dropping the game to the Banana Slugs with a final score of 0-1.

The Banana Slugs offense out shined the Urban Knights', but the Urban knights' defense is what kept them in the game. Battling hard to keep the Banana Slugs scoreless after their many scoring attempts, Academy of Art University goal keepers Solveig Barnes and Melissa Co combined for a total of 12 saves. The Urban Knights only managed one shot on goal during the game, and they were outshot by their opponents 28-1.

Sophomore goal keeper Solveig Barnes had 11 saves and allowed one goal in 82 minutes of play. Barnes had seven saves in the first half, and four in the second, before being relieved by freshman keeper Melissa Co. Co had one save in eight minutes of play.

The loan offensive attack for the Urban Knights came from freshman Jasmine Sharpe who had one shot on goal in the game.

For UC Santa Cruz, Kira Ticua had six shots, five which were on goal, Wendy Funk had eight shots, including two on goal, and Jackie Belton had six shots, two of which were on goal in the game. The winning penalty kick shot came from Katy Von Beroldingen who had four shots, including two on goal and one goal on the day. Three other UC Santa Cruz players had shots during the match.

After the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 1-12-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference and UC Santa Cruz's record improves to 11-4 on the season. The Urban Knights travel to Hawaii where they will play three games. Game one is scheduled for Monday, October 26th at 1:00pm (4:00 PST) against BYU-Hawaii.
