Urban Knights Down the Hawks

Box Score

Oakland, CA---
The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team traveled just across the bridge to take on the Holy Names University Hawks tonight at Tobin Gym. It was a hard fought battle that lasted five sets, but AAU prevailed victorious. The Urban Knights won the first two sets in a convincing fashion, 25-17, 25-18. Holy Names, however, rallied back to take the next two 26-24, 25-23, and AAU squeaked out a win in the fifth set to give them the win overall, 15-10.

The Urban Knights hit .526 percent as a team during the first set. They knocked down 13 kills on 19 attempts. Mid way through the first set Jill Singletary had three block solos in a row to spark a 11-3 run to close out the first set, 25-17.

Much like the first the Urban Knights established their dominance early. A 17-6 run early in the set helped catapult the Knights over the Hawks. AAU out hit Holy Names 18-10, while Jelena Jakovljevic  finished the set with eight kills alone. The attacking power of the Urban Knights helped them take the second set 25-18.

It looked like AAU was going to sweep all three sets, but on match point it was Holy Names who would score the final two points ending the set 26-24. Although AAU finished the set with 15 kills to Holy Names eight, it was errors that cost them the win.

Down 19-24 in the fourth set AAU scored four straight points to bring them to within one point. On the very next play a service error by Camille Board gave Holy Names the point and the set, 25-23.

With the match tied two sets a piece, it was 15 points that stood in the way of the Urban Knights 16th win or eighth loss of the season. Luckily for the Urban Knights everything clicked in the fifth set, and they cruised to a 15-10 win.

For AAU Dan Yang lead all players with 24 kills and 11 digs. Jakovljevic pitched in with 15 kills and 16 digs. Heather Allen paced the Knights with 23 digs while Melissa Cheng dished out 52 assists.

The win brings AAU's overall record to 16-7 and they remain 4-3 in conference play. The Urban Knights gear up for a four game trip to Hawaii. They will take on BYU-Hawaii on Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, then head over to the big island where they will play University of Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.
