San Francisco, Calif. (11/2/08)-- The Academy Art University Women's soccer team held their last game of the season at home this past Sunday. The Urban Knights played fierce, trying to make up for their loss against CSU East Bay two days before. Strong defense and outstanding goal tending kept the AAU Women in the game. Despite all the hard efforts put forth by the Urban Knights, the Women could not hold on for the win and ended up losing 2-3 in overtime.
AAU took advantage of their strong offense and scored first. The goal in the 28th minute of play, off a shot from AAU freshman defender Therasa Sianez. Freshman striker Solveig Barnes got the assist. The Urban Knight defense then stepped up. They held CSUEB scoreless in the first half and well into the second. CSUEB scored in the 82nd minute and then took the lead with another goal in the 86th minute of play. The Urban Knights were quick to answer back, and scored again in the 87th minute of the game. This time it came off a shot by sophomore defender Emi Sullivan, again with an assist from Solveig Barnes. This shot tied the game, and the Women headed into overtime.
Urban Knight freshman goal keeper Shelby Magallon really stepped up for her team. She posted seven saves on the night, including two in overtime. But despite her great attempts and AAU's strong defense, CSU East Bay scored in the ninth minute of overtime, winning the game 3-2.
With the losses on both Friday and Sunday to CSU East Bay, the Urban Knight's record falls to 2-14-1 overall. Even though the Women have a losing record, they had a great inaugural season. They played a hard schedule and many tough teams, including some that were nationally ranked. The Urban Knights were able to hang with all of their opponents and prove that they will be major contenders in years to come.
