Belmont, Calif. (10/29/08)-- The Urban Knights stepped into action again on Wednesday afternoon, this time facing the cross-town rivals of Notre Dame de Namur University. The AAU Women were anxious and came out strong, eager for a win. The Urban Knights scored first, but unfortunately their lead would not hold for long as they lost 1-6.
Academy of Art University dominated the beginning of the first half. Defense was strong and the Urban Knights had been attacking offensively, posting 10 shots on the day, six of which were on goal. AAU's
Jessica Madrid tried to score from a strong shot 30 yards out, but hit the cross bar. Shortly after, the Women got their first and only goal of the game. It came in the 11
th minute of play on a shot by
Therasa Sianez off a pass by
Morgan LeFever. At that point, it seemed the Urban Knights had all the momentum; but they became over confident.
Almost immediately after AAU's goal, the NDNU Argos answered back with a goal of their own. They were able to score two more goals in the first half, taking a lead 3-1 into halftime.
The Urban Knights regrouped during the half and came out again attacking hard.
The intensity did not last for long, however, as the Argos were quick to take back control of the game. The Argos posted three more goals in the second half and ended up winning by a score of 6-1.
“The girls started off really strong and we owned the first part of the game,” exclaimed Head Coach Courteney Cosso. “But NDNU didn't let up. We were having trouble marking up in the middle and NDNU capitalized on every one of our defensive mistakes. But this game is behind us now; we move on and hopefully get two wins against East Bay this weekend.”
With the win, the Notre Dame De Namur University Argos remain undefeated in the Pac West. The loss however, drops the Urban Knight's to a 2-12-1 record overall. AAU's final two games of the season are set to take place this weekend. They are scheduled to play California State University East Bay in Hayward, CA on October 31
st at 3:00 PM. They then return home to host CSUEB in Academy of Art University's final game of the season on November 2
nd at 12:00 PM.
