Graduate student outside hitter/right side Maya McClellan shined not only in the first victory for Academy of Art volleyball, but in all four matches to begin the Urban Knights' 2023 campaign, averaging 3.47 kills, 3.00 digs, and 0.41 service aces per set while collecting three double-doubles.
In Turlock for the Stan State Tournament, McClellan opened the season with 17 kills, 15 digs, two service aces, and two blocks in a five-set battle with Chico State on
Aug. 31. The San Carlos native followed that up on
Sept. 1 with another double-double in the form of 16 kills and 14 digs along with four service aces against tournament host Stanislaus State in another five sets. Competing twice on
Sept. 2 to wrap up the busy week, McCllelan totaled seven kills and four digs versus Western Oregon then season highs of 19 kills and 18 digs plus two blocks in ART U's victory over Western New Mexico, finishing on the Stan State All-Tournament Team.
Through the first weekend of play for Academy of Art, McClellan ranks sixth in the Pacific West Conference in points per set (4.12) as well as seventh in kills per set (3.47).
