Rohnert Park, Calif. (2/4/09) -- The AAU women's tennis team fell to Sonoma State 3-6 on Wednesday afternoon at the Seawolf Courts. Both sophomore Cassy Fabiani and sophomore Laone "Lala" Botshoma took care of business at the #1 doubles slot in addition to the #1 and #2 singles spots respectively. Unfortunately for the Urban Knights, Academy of Art University could not hold on after losing in the #3 through #6 singles positions.
relinquished only one game in her #1 singles match for her second consecutive straight sets victory of the season. She defeated Stephanie Luk 6-0, 6-1 and would combine with teammate Botshoma to earn a 9-7 #1 doubles victory over Luk and Molly Maguire. Botshoma had a strong performance in her own #2 singles match against a Dana Carollo which ended after one set (6-3) when Carollo retired.
At #3, freshman Paola Correa Fe dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Molly Maguire while freshman Maria "Belen" Tenorio fell to Jeanette Peck 6-1, 7-5 at #4. Senior Anna Ritchie was bested by Jessica Harris 6-0, 6-0 at #5 before freshman Cecilia Hedin lost to Stephanie Hoffmire 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action, Carollo and Daley Hickock defeated Correa Fe and Tenorio 8-0 at #2 and the team of Ritchie and Hedin was bested by Harris and Hoffmire 8-1.
Overall, the Knights now hold a 0-2 record while this matchup served as Sonoma State's season opener and they improve to 1-0.
A five-day tournament is up next for Academy of Art University which will be hosted by Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. AAU will compete against Chaminade, BYU – Hawaii, Grand Canyon, Dixie State and Midwestern State beginning on Feb. 10 at 3:30 PM.
